What is ACERSI?
The Association for Conductive Education and Related Services, Inc. (ACERS, Inc.) is a non-profit association founded by parents and professionals to provide and promote Conductive Education (CE) services to individuals with motor disabilities and their families.

ACERS, Inc. has been offering its programs in NJ for over 10 years and now has programs in PA, NY and MA.* 

 

Who benefits?

Conductive Education benefits individuals with physical disabilities (including traumatic brain injury) such as:

  • Cerebral Palsy (CP)
  • Spina Bifida
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • and other neuromuscular disorders

The educational institutions listed on the autism education site either primarily serve children on the autism spectrum or educate children with an autism spectrum disorder alongside children with other learning differences. The admissions requirement vary by school; some schools only serve the high-functioning autism population while others are geared towards children more severely affected by autism.

Special Education Supports and Services
The Los Angeles Unified School District, Division of Special Education, provides a range of program and related services to students found eligible for special education. Service and support is also provided to schools and parents in a variety of areas included, but not limited to: autism, deaf and hard of hearing, inclusion, infant/pre-school, and visually impaired. Additional related services include adapted physical education, assistive technology, audiological services, instruction in home or hospital, physical therapy and occupational therapy, speech and language and transition services.

Carlson Home/ Hospital School provides services for eligible students who reside within the boundaries of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Carlson is staffed by fully credentialed contracted and retired teachers assigned to serve students in their homes or at hospital sites. Carlson teachers, to the maximum extent possible, provide instruction in subjects and courses correlating with the student's home school program. The intent is to maintain continuity of the student's instructional program during the period of his or her convalescence. It is important to understand that the service is designed as a temporary interim placement. It does not replace, over an extended period of time, the regular required instructional program. This service is also provided for students eligible for services with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a Section 504 Plan. Requests for Carlson services may come from the student's school of attendance, LAUSD personnel, parents, medical care provider or social worker using the appropriate district-approved form.

UCLA Intervention Program for Children with Disabilities is a family focused preschool program for children from birth to 3 years of age who have developmental disabilities including mental retardation and cerebral palsy. The program meets daily at the UCLA Rehabilitation Center. Children are assessed by a developmental pediatrician, early childhood educators, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists. A social worker provides individual and group support for family members. A Special Needs After-school Program is also available for children who are enrolled in the UCLA Intervention Program, as well as children from the community 24 months to 8 years of age.

The Bridge School is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure that individuals with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative & alternative means of communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) applications and through the development, implementation and dissemination of innovative life-long educational strategies. The Bridge School is an internationally recognized leader in the education of children who use augmentative and alternative communication and has developed unique programs and trained highly skilled professionals in the use of state of the art assistive technology.

The CHIME Institute (CHIME) is a national leader in the development and delivery of quality inclusive education. Since 1990, it has pursued a dual mission to develop and implement model programs that support all children to achieve their maximum potential, and that provide dynamic research and training environments to disseminate best educational practices. The preschool is an inclusion school and is located on the campus of California State University, Northridge. The elementary school, while also an inclusion school, is not on the CSU campus, but also is located in Northridge, California. Chime has many programs for the special needs child.
